I’ve just returned from field trials in southern Italy, and the results are thrilling. Our peptide-based bioinsecticide, SPEAR® LEP, continues to prove its efficacy, expanding its reach across new crops and pests, and reinforcing its role as a game-changer in sustainable agriculture.

In early July, in Conselice, we tested SPEAR LEP against Lobesia botrana (European grapevine moth) in grape crops. The data speak for themselves: untreated plots showed 47% of bunches infested with an average of 2.4 damaged berries per bunch, while SPEAR LEP combined with Bt reduced infestation to 18.5% and damaged berries to just 0.53 per bunch—showing comparable performance to the conventional synthetic standard (14% infestation, 0.46 damaged berries). These results highlight SPEAR LEP’s ability to rival synthetic pesticides while being gentle on pollinators and local biodiversity.

In a separate trial in the same region, we targeted Helicoverpa armigera (cotton bollworm) in outdoor tomatoes. At 7 days after the second application, untreated plots had 33% of fruits damaged, while SPEAR LEP + Bt reduced this to 12.3%, closely competing with the conventional product at 9.8%.

“These trials underscore SPEAR LEP’s versatility across diverse crops and pests, from grapes to tomatoes, and its reliability in real-world conditions.”

Our peptide-based technology is breaking new ground, offering growers effective, sustainable solutions as pest resistance to traditional synthetics grows. The success on the ground in Italy is a testament to our team’s rigorous trialing and Vestaron’s proprietary platform, which rapidly develops targeted bioinsecticides (producing two new AIs in just five years, a new industry benchmark). With a growing list of emergency use authorizations across the EU, we’re building trust with growers and regulators, paving the way for broader market expansion in Europe and beyond.

What I saw in Italy reinforces what we’re hearing from growers across the region: they’re ready for new solutions. These results mirror what we’ve seen in California’s almond and pistachio orchards, where SPEAR LEP continues to meet or exceed conventional standards for control of key lepidopteran pests. As shared in recent updates, third-party trials across tree nut crops confirmed that our peptide-based approach delivers the efficacy growers demand.

Peptides represent the next frontier in biological crop protection, and Vestaron is leading the charge through products that deliver precision, safety, and sustainability without sacrificing performance. And now, thanks to our field teams and grower partners, we’re seeing exactly how that potential plays out on real farms in real conditions.

Once approved, SPEAR LEP will be a vital tool for controlling Europe’s toughest insect pests. Growers, especially fruit and vegetable producers, urgently need permanent access to peptide-based bioinsecticides to drive sustainable agriculture and unlock further technological innovations.

There’s much more to come. But for now, we’re proud to say SPEAR LEP stacks up. And growers are taking notice.

What Growers Are Saying

“Over the years, Europe has revoked several molecules, various active substances that we used for protection against Tuta absoluta. That means we need new modes of action on the market to fight this pest. SPEAR LEP fits well into an integrated pest management strategy precisely because it doesn’t cause resistance to develop. You can apply it even during the harvest period, and there’s no need to wait to re-enter the greenhouse or to harvest.”

Andrea Occhipinti

Field Technician, Italy

“In recent years, Tuta absoluta has been a big problem because there haven’t any agrochemicals to eliminate it. Compared to other agrochemicals, SPEAR LEP gives me better results. With the last treatment, if I apply it today, I start seeing results the next day.”

Francesco Giacuinta

Tomato Farmer, Italy

“Thanks to SPEAR LEP, which we started using during the flowering period, we immediately noticed visible results on the plant and on the fruit. SPEAR LEP is a product with immediate effects. I apply the treatment, and after two days I can already see the results. The plant is doing well and there are no severe infestations.”

Giuseppe Fava

Agricultural Entrepreneur, Italy

“We ran our own tests and observed remarkable results. SPEAR LEP is an excellent product for us: it doesn’t impact the environment, it’s not toxic for the applicator, and presents no problems for the consumer.”
